La humildad y obediencia
San Francisco dio a su orden el nombre de "Frailes Menores" por humildad, pues quería que sus hermanos fuesen los siervos de todos y buscasen siempre los sitios más humildes. Con frecuencia exhortaba a sus compañeros al trabajo manual y, si bien les permitía pedir limosna, les tenía prohibido que aceptasen dinero. Pedir limosna no constituía para él una vergüenza, ya que era una manera de imitar la pobreza de Cristo. Sobre la excelsa virtud de la humildad, decía: "Bienaventurado el siervo a quien lo encuentran en medio de sus inferiores con la misma humildad que si estuviera en medio de sus superiores. Bienaventurado el siervo que siempre permanece bajo la vara de la corrección. Es siervo fiel y prudente el que, por cada culpa que comete, se apresura a expiarlas: interiormente, por la contrición y exteriormente por la confesión y la satisfacción de obra". El santo no permitía que sus hermanos predicasen en una diócesis sin permiso expreso del Obispo. Entre otras cosas, dispuso que "si alguno de los frailes se apartaba de la fe católica en obras o palabras y no se corregía, debería ser expulsado de la hermandad".
