Tango has its roots in European and African culture, and originated in the lower-class districts of Buenos Aires and Montevido sometime in the 1890s. Tango encompasses a variety of styles that evolved and developed as it spread through the different geographical and cultural regions of Argentina. The crowding of venues and clothing also influenced the various styles of tango which can be either "close embrace, where the dancers dance chest to chest (Argentine tango), or "open embrace", where there is space between the dancers bodies (International tango). The closer styles generally having rhythmic footwork with smaller steps; and the open styles with long elegant steps with more complex footwork.

The dramatic feeling engendered by tango dancing and music are part of the reason it is often used in other types of performances like figure skating and magic shows. It has also been suggested that dancing tango makes you sexier and more relaxed.
