THIRUMIYACHUR THE SACRED ABODE OF
THE MOTHER AND THE LORD
Bharatha Kanda is not only an ancient land but also one that has let the entire world partake of its spiritual wealth. Spirituality is the pulse of mankind. Spirituality offers solace and peace to those given to the pursuit of transient worldly pleasures. countless are the saints, Siddhas, Nayanmars and Alwars, who have shown us this panacea, numerous the sacred places in Tamilnadu where they lived, sang ecstatically the praise of the Divine and attained salvation. The foremost of them is Thirumiyachur, which Thirunavukarasar has sung as follows:
Many temples have been built to this day and many more may yet to be built but the one that befits the Lord with the cool delicate locks, who vanquished kootruvan is this temple. Appar goes on to extol this temple as one that transforms the minds of devotees. Thirugnanasambandar exhorts us to visit the temple to absolve ourselves of our sins. This sacred and much sung Thirumiyachur lies in the midst of fields and gardens watered by the river Cauvery.
It was here that Surya became free of his curse and Saneeswara and Yama were born to him. Vali, Sugriva, Arunan and Garuda were also born here. This temple has no Navagrahas, but has instead, 12 nagas including the Pathala Linga, 25 Lingas. The Vimana of the Temple has the form of Gajabrishta, e.i. the back of an elephant. This is where Lalitha Sahasranama, which resounds across all temples in the world came into being. It was here that Mother Lalitha appeared to Sage Agasthya personifying the Navarathnas. Mother Lalithambika of this temple appeared in the dream of a devotee and expressed the desire to wear anklets and got the devotee to adorn her with it. Let us now proceed to this mighty and wondrous temple. Thirumiyachur lies about one Kilometer from Peralam which lies in the intersection of the roads leading to Mayiladuthurai - Thiruvarur and Kumbakonam - Karaikal respectively. From peralam we drive through a road flanked by lush green fields and reach Thirumiyachur.
On the right side of the Sannathi street in Thirumiyachur is the Suryapushkarani. According to Puranas Surya created this pond and did penance and worshipped Lord Shiva here every day for six month to be rid of his curse. This sacred pond is graced further by
a shrine for Surya in the east and a shrine for Vinayaka in the west.
The lofty five - tiered Rajagopuram is a very grand sight indeed. We enter the Gopuram. Even as we enter we are embraced by a divine Breeze replete with music. A soft tinkling of bells floats down from the flag mast that seems to reach up to the sky. we offer obeisance to Lord Vinayaga who is seated on the pedestal of the flag mast. We then look up to the top of the flag mast and behold the parrot, which personifies Sukha Brahmam, waiting to greet us with its sweet twitter. Before entering the temple for worship we beseech Nandi Deva to grant us permission to do so.
