Virtual archaeology - Roman harbour near Zadar APPLICATION description

Visualization of the submerged Roman harbour near Zadar
Mobile application Virtual archaeology - Roman harbour near Zadar is the result of implementing the VirtualArch project funded by the Interreg Central Europe program, within which the City of Zadar acts as a project partner. The aim of the virtual reconstruction of the archaeological site, an ancient submerged harbour near Zadar, and the project itself is to bring less known and yet undiscovered archaeological sites along central Europe to local population and tourists. The idea of implementing the abovementioned project was developed in close cooperation with the International Center for Underwater Archaeology in Zadar, a UNESCO institution with experienced experts in the field of underwater archaeology, which produced many interesting results. More information about the project can be found on the official website of the City of Zadar.

About the location
As Luka Jelić, a priest, reports, the remains of the massive walls were recorded during the 17th century by the historian from Zadar, Šimun Ljubavac, who already concluded that a Roman countryside villa (lat. Villa rustica) can be found on the site. Local population’s and other scientists’ interest about the archaeological heritage was first activated during the 1970s when the remains were documented for the first time. Underwater reconnaissance carried out by members of the Archaeological Museum in Zadar, led by B. Ilakovac in 1973, resulted in detailed description of structures visible in shoal. Recognizing the importance of this underwater archaeological site, the Ministry of Culture included the remains of the ancient harbour situated between capes Plitkača and Kažela in the Barbir bay in the Register of Cultural Properties of the Republic of Croatia in 2002. Researches were restarted by the members of the International Centre for Underwater Archaeology in Zadar who carried out inspections of ancient structures in 2013 and 2014. In 2017, they conducted the project funded by the Ministry of Culture whose aim was to research and document the underwater harbour installations. In 2018, the research continued within the VirtualArch project, funded by the Interreg Central Europe program and the support of the City of Zadar, when detailed orthophoto recordings and digital elevation model were performed.
