Men build bubble nests of various sizes and thicknesses on the surface of the water. Most tend to do this regularly even if no woman is present.
Plants or stones that break the surface often form the basis for bubble nests. Spawning itself is called a "wedding hug," because men wrap their bodies around women; about 10 - 40 eggs are released during each hug, until the female runs out of eggs. Men, in turn, release milt into the water, and fertilization occurs externally. During and after spawning, the male uses his mouth to take the sinking egg and store it in a bubble nest (as long as the couple sometimes helps, but only consumes all the eggs he catches). After the female releases all the eggs, she is chased from the male region, because she tends to eat the eggs. If he is not removed from the tank, he is likely to be killed by a man.
