Light destroys the diazonium salt. The gas or ammonia solution is used as the developer after exposure, neutralizes the acid and allows the remaining diazonium salt to coalesce with the reactant to produce a blue color. Chemicals on paper obtain color only in areas that are not exposed to light. This method produces a diazotype black line on a white background, and is a popular method used today for large format image reproduction.
