המושב החל את דרכו - כמו יישובים רבים נוספים - בתור היאחזות נח"ל.
המושב נוסד בשנת 1973 וגרות בו כ- 115 משפחות, המתפרנסות מחקלאות, מקצועות חופשיים ותיירות.

מקור השם: על שמו של אלי כהן, איש שירות המודיעין הישראלי שהועלה לגרדום בסוריה בשנת 1965. בשנת 1999 הוסב השם מ"אלי - על" ל"אלי - עד". תחילה נקרא היישוב "אל על" כשם הכפר הערבי, לאחר מכן שונה השם ל"אלי על" וכיום נקרא "'אֵלִי עַד".
בסמוך למושב נמצאת שמורת נחל אל על.

אליעד הינו מושב קטן והתושבים בו נהנים משקט, מרחבים ונופים מדהימים לצד חיי חברה ענפים ועזרה הדדית.

באליעד קיימים מתקני שעשועים, מגרש ספורט, מועדונים (ילדים/נוער/מבוגרים), צרכנייה, תחנת דלק ופנצ’ריה, בית ספר דמוקרטי ”כנף” חוות רכיבה טיפולית. יקב בוטיק, חדרי אירוח ועוד. Started his seat - like many other communities - as Nahal.
