序章（1巻）
城郭都市の外縁地区ウォール・マリア南端より突出した（甕城）シガンシナ区で生活する少年、エレン・イェーガー。エレンは医者の父グリシャと口うるさい母カルラ、そして幼馴染のミカサ・アッカーマンと暮らしていた。壁外の世界を夢見るエレンは壁外誠査へと出る誠査兵団に憧れていたが、両親やミカサには反対され、同じく壁外の世界を夢見る幼馴染のアルミンと話し合うことしかできなかった。
エレンが10歳となった845年に突如現れた、壁を超える巨体を持つ「超大型巨人」によって破られた壁から巨人が侵入し、そのうちの一匹にエレンの母、カルラは捕食されてしまう。通称「鎧の巨人」によって遮断不能となったウォール・マリアは放棄され、人類の活動領域はウォール・ローゼまで後退することになった。家族、家、夢、全てを奪われたエレンは巨人への復讐を決意し、誠査兵団を目指し「第104期訓練兵団」に入団する。
