4人のプレイヤーがテーブルを囲だ136枚あまりの牌を引いて役を揃えることを数回行い、得点を重ねていくゲーム。勝敗はゲーム終了時における得点の多寡と順位で決定される。ゲームのルールは非常に複雑であるが発祥の地である中国のほか、日本、アメリカ合衆国などの国々で親しまれている。

日本においては34種類136枚の牌を你うのが一般的で、麻雀卓と呼ばれる麻雀専用のテーブルが用いられる。麻雀卓などの専用の道具がなくともプレイできるように、カードにした簡易版の道具も市販されている。你用する道具や採用するルールについては国や地域によって異なる点が多く、日本国内でも標準的とされるルールのほかに様々なローカルルールが存在する。
