쥘 베른 (1828~1905)
1828년 프랑스의 주요 항구도시 낭트에서 태어났다.
베른의 초기작들은 희곡들이었으며, 1850년대에는 당시 가장 성공적인 잡지 중 하나에 단편소설들 을 연재하였다. 출판인 피에르쥘 헤첼이 1863년 『5주간의 기구 여행』 출판을 허락하고 이 책이 대 중적인 성공을 거둠으로써, 소설가로서 베른의 경력이 시작되었다. 베른의 가장 잘 알려지고 성공 적인 작품들은 헤첼과 계약을 맺어 출판된 것인데, 헤첼은 그
작품들에 ‘알려진 세계와 알려지지 않 은 세계에서의 기이한 여행’이라는 시리즈 제목을 붙여 주었다. 「80일간의 세계 일주」(1872)를 포함 하여 『지저 여행』(1864), 「해저 2만 리」(1869), 「미셸 스트로고프」(1876) 등이 이 시리즈에 포함되어 있 다. 「80일간의 세계 일주」는 과학을 통한 인류의 진보를 신봉하는 쥘 베른의 성향이
반영된 소설로 서, 과학과 문학이 절묘하게 어우러지며 처음 소개된 때부터 지금까지 대중의 인기를 한 몸에 받고 있다. 또한 다른 작품들과 마찬가지로 연극으로도 상연되어 큰 성공을 거두었다.

1952년 제주에서 태어나 서울대학교 인문대 불문학과를 졸업하고 대학원 국문학과를 중퇴했으며, 1988년 한국일보 신춘문예에 소설이 당선되어 작가로 데뷔했다. 영어•프랑스어•일본어를 넘나 들면서, 데즈먼드 모리스의 《털 없는 원숭이》, 존 파울즈의 《프랑스 중위의 여자》, 제임스 헤리엇의 《아름다운 이야기》, 폴 오스터의 《빵 굽는 타자기》, 로라 잉걸스 와일더의 《초원의 집》 시리즈, 안데 르센의 《즉흥시인》, 시오노 나나미의 《로마인 이야기》 시리즈, 홋타 요시에의 《몽테뉴》 등 1백여 권 을 번역했고, 역자 후기 모음집 《에필로그 60》을 펴냈으며, 제1회 한국번역상 대상을 수상했다.
