En cierta ocasión en que se hallaba enfermo, alguien propuso que se le leyese un libro para distraerle. El Santo respondió: "Nada me consuela tanto como la contemplación de la vida y Pasión del Señor. Aunque hubiese de vivir hasta el fin del mundo, con ese solo libro me bastaría". Francisco se había enamorado de la santa pobreza, mientras contemplaba a Cristo crucificado y meditaba en la nueva crucifixión que sufría en la persona de los pobres.
El santo no despreciaba la ciencia, pero no la deseaba para sus discípulos. Los estudios sólo tenían razón de ser como medios para un fin y sólo podían aprovechar a los frailes menores, si no les impedían consagrar a la oración un tiempo todavía más largo y si les enseñaban más bien, a predicarse a sí mismos que a hablar a otros. Francisco aborrecía los estudios que alimentaban más la vanidad que la piedad, porque entibiaban la caridad y secaban el corazón. Sobre todo, temía que la señora Ciencia se convirtiese en rival de la dama Pobreza. Viendo con cuánta ansiedad acudían a las escuelas y buscaban los libros sus hermanos, Francisco exclamó en cierta ocasión: "Impulsados por el mal espíritu, mis pobres hermanos acabarán por abandonar el camino de la sencillez y de la pobreza".
En sus escritos, esto es lo que el Santo nos dejó dicho sobre la vigilancia del corazón: “Cuidémonos mucho de la malicia y astucia de Satanás, el cual quiere que el hombre no tenga su mente y su corazón dirigidos a Dios. Y anda dando vueltas buscando adueñarse del corazón del hombre y, bajo la apariencia de alguna recompensa o ayuda, ahogar en su memoria la palabra y los preceptos del Señor, e intenta cegar el corazón del hombre mediante las actividades y preocupaciones mundanas, y fijar allí su morada”.
