Martirologio Romano: Memoria de san Francisco, el cual, después de una juventud despreocupada, se convirtió a la vida evangélica en Asís, localidad de Umbría, en Italia, y encontró a Cristo sobre todo en los pobres y necesitados, haciéndose pobre él mismo. Instituyó los Hermanos Menores y, viajando, predicó el amor de Dios a todos y llegó incluso a Tierra Santa. Con sus palabras y actitudes mostró siempre su deseo de seguir a Cristo, y escogió morir recostado sobre la nuda tierra.
Francisco nació en Asís, Italia en 1181 ó 1182. Su padre era comerciante y su madre pertenecía a una familia noble. Tenían una situación económica muy desahogada. Su padre comerciaba mucho con Francia y cuando nació su hijo estaba fuera del país. Las gentes apodaron al niño “francesco” (el francés) aunque éste había recibido en su bautismo el nombre de “Juan”.

En su juventud no se interesó ni por los negocios de su padre ni por los estudios. Se dedicó a gozar de la vida sanamente, sin malas costumbres ni vicios. Gastaba mucho dinero pero siempre daba limosnas a los pobres. Le gustaban las románticas tradiciones caballerescas que propagaban los trovadores.

Cuando Francisco tenía como unos veinte años, hubo pleitos y discordia entre las ciudades de Perugia y Asís. Francisco fue prisionero un año y lo soportó con alegría. Cuando recobró la libertad cayó gravemente enfermo. La enfermedad fortaleció y maduró su espíritu. Cuando se recuperó, decidió ir a combatir en el ejército. Se compró una costosa armadura y un manto que regaló a un caballero mal vestido y pobre. Dejó de combatir y volvió a su antigua vida pero sin tomarla tan a la ligera. Se dedicó a la oración y después de un tiempo tuvo la inspiración de vender todos sus bienes y comprar la perla preciosa de la que habla el Evangelio. Se dio cuenta que la batalla espiritual empieza por la mortificación y la victoria sobre los instintos. Un día se encontró con un leproso que le pedía una limosna y le dio un beso. Martyrology Romano: Memory of St. Francis, who, after a carefree youth, became the evangelical life in Assisi, a town in Umbria, Italy, and found Christ especially in the poor and needy, becoming poor himself. He instituted the Friars Minor and traveling, preached the love of God to all and even went to the Holy Land. With his words and attitudes always he showed his desire to follow Christ, and chose to die lying on the bare earth.
Francis was born in Assisi, Italy in 1181 or 1182. His father was a merchant and his mother belonged to a noble family. They had a very comfortable financial situation. His father traded a lot with France and when his son was born outside the country. The people nicknamed the child "francesco" (French) although he had received at his baptism the name "John".

In his youth he was not interested nor business his father nor studies. He devoted himself to enjoy life healthily, without bad habits or vices. He spent a lot of money but always gave alms to the poor. He liked the romantic chivalric traditions that spread the troubadours.

When Francisco had about twenty years, there was strife and discord between the cities of Perugia and Assisi. Francisco was imprisoned a year and endured it joyfully. When he regained his freedom he fell seriously ill. The disease strengthened and matured his spirit. When he recovered, he decided to fight in the army. an expensive armor and a cloak that gave a shabbily dressed and poor gentleman was purchased. He stopped fighting and returned to his old life but without taking it so lightly. He devoted himself to prayer and after a while was inspired to sell all their goods and buy the precious pearl of which the Gospel speaks. He realized that the spiritual battle begins mortification and victory over instincts. One day he met a leper who asked for alms and kissed him.
