يعتبر هذا الكتاب بحث في نقد الأصول وتحري الحقائق التاريخية وإيضاحها وعرضها في ما يقابل ذلك من علم الحديث، حيث تدور فكرته حول منهج الكتابة التاريخية - ميثودلوجيا التاريخ أو مناهج البحث لدى المؤرخين - في محاولة من الكاتب لتغيير مفهوم الكتابة التاريخية عند مؤرخي اليوم التي لا تتعدي نقل الرواية والإلمام بقواعد اللغة إلى جعل الكتابة التاريخية علما له أصول يعوز هذا العلم ما يعوز سائر العلوم من نشأة علمية خالصة يتربى فيها على بعض الأسس والقواعد الفنية للكتابة، جامعا ما توصل فيه علماؤنا القدامى وعلماء الغرب في هذا المجال. تلك الشروط أو القواعد سيوردها الكاتب تباعا في أحد عشر بابا من خلال مزج تلك القواعد النظرية بالتجارب الشخصية التي مر بها أو بمعنى آخر ما تعرض إليه أسد رستم في حياته. ويلاحظ تأثر أسد رستم الشديد بعلم مصطلح الحديث في كثير من المواضع كما يكثر من الثناء على مجهودات علماء الحديث في التحري والدقة.

الباب الرابع : تنظيم العمل
